Plot.
In 1982, Taeko Okajima is 27 years of age, unmarried, has carried on with for what seems like forever in Tokyo and presently works at an organization there. She chooses to go on one more outing to visit the group of her senior sister's parents in law in the rustic field to assist with the safflower gather and move away from city life.
While going around evening time on a sleeper train to Yamagata, she starts to review recollections of herself as a student in 1966, and her powerful craving to go on vacation like her cohorts, every one of whom have family beyond the enormous city.
At the appearance train station, she is shocked to figure out that her brother by marriage's second cousin Toshio, whom she scarcely knows, is the person who came to get her. During her visit in Yamagata, she finds herself progressively nostalgic and thoughtful for her life as a youngster self, while at the same time grappling with grown-up issues of vocation and love.
The excursion brings up failed to remember recollections (not every one of them great ones) — the primary stirrings of silly sentiment, pubescence and growing up, the dissatisfactions of math and young men. In expressive switches between the present and the past, Taeko contemplates whether she has been consistent with the fantasies of her life as a youngster self. In doing as such, she starts to understand that Toshio has helped her en route. At last, Taeko faces her own actual self, how she sees the world and individuals around her.
Taeko decides to remain in the field as opposed to getting back to Tokyo. It is inferred that she and Toshio start a relationship.
